The gazed fixedly in motion
…While the Piezas distinguidas (Distinguished Pieces) were conceived as a work about and from the body, Trientaycuatropiècesdistinguées&onestriptease is first and foremost a work about the gaze. The body ceases to be an object and becomes an excuse for fixing a certain gaze to which falls the responsibility of motion. The film thus appears as the final destination of a journey that began in the theatre – in other words, with the observance of present body in action (13 Piezas distinguidas & Más distinguidas, fisrt version)- moved on to the gallery and museum, particularly inverting the assignment of mobility and immobility to performer and spectator (Más distinguidas, second version, and Still distinguidas ), and concluded by putting gaze itself to motion.

Extract by José A. Sanchez

Giorgio Sadotti

Violin Siren (2004) translates one particular sound of the city into the realms of music and art, calling to mind the music trespassing of Satie and Cage. Violin Siren is performed by four violin players who, in conjunction with Sadotti, have individually created a score that mimics the sound of an emergency services siren.
While playing their instruments the performers pace through the exhibition space, disrupting all other sound and conversation. Sadotti gives sound, which exists only in an ephemeral, abstract form, a face and a sculptural existence.

Commissioned by Balin House Projects, Beating the Bounds of Tabard Estate is a project by artist Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre explores the past, present and future of Tabard Estate, with particular reference to local history, personal memories, and architectural and urban changes in a heritage-rich area of London currently undergoing a fast process of regeneration driven by commercial development. In partnership with Tabard Gardens Estate North Tenants and Residents Association, and funded by Awards for All.

During January 2009, a series of walks exploring the area were led by residents of Tabard Gardens Estate, community leaders and local historians.

The stories and mappings generated by the walks are being used as the starting point for a series of free art workshops for children and young people from the Estate, during February 2009 half-term, using a range of creative techniques (drawing, collage, painting, mono-printing, and creative writing).

Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre
This project is part of a series of walks, events and artworks by Ana Laura during her 18-month period as Artist in Residence, supported by Southwark Council, South London Gallery and ACME studios. Her Southwark-based work has included a series of themed ‘Night Salons’, facilitating conversation between artists and local residents, plus a 20-mile ‘Border Patrol’ ride with Southwark Cyclists to mark the longest night of the year.

Tabard Gardens North TRA
The Tabard Estate consists of around 1,450 properties in 40 blocks of flats. The estate stretches from Borough tube and Borough High Street in the north, in a south easterly flank, down to the big roundabout at the top of the Old Kent Road. There are three separate Tenants and Residence Associations. This project is being run with the support of Tabard North T&RA, chaired by Peter Davis.

Beating the Bounds
The name of the project refers to a traditional custom originating before maps were readily available that involved an annual walk lead by the local priest to remind communities of their parish boundaries. The boundary would be ‘beaten’ with switches to remove obstructions and to reaffirm the parish territory. It was seen as a time for the community to resolve any formal boundary issues and also reconcile personal relationships.
